The beauty of Thracian folk costumes
Bulgarian folk costumes are a treasure. So beautiful, so majestic, keeping within themselves the traditions and spirit of a glorious people. Each of our 7 areas is distinguished by its costumes, made with great attention to every small detail. Today we will talk about the Thracian folk costumes. The Thracian folklore region covers the administrative regions of Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, Haskovo, Stara Zagora, Yambol, Sliven, including the municipality of Koprivshtitsa. The district extends to the Middle and Eastern Stara Planina in the north, in the west - to Rila and Ikhtimanska Sredna Gora, in the south - to Pirin, the Rhodope Mountains, the borders with Greece and Turkey, in the east - to the Strandzha region. Folk costumes from this area are distinguished by a wide variety, color range, refined elements and a lot of detail. Let's look first at the female Thracian costume: It consists of a red cloth, which is beautifully embroidered on the edges of the skirt; a delicate white cotton shirt and an embroidered black wool apron with white lace. Some models have traditional folk embroidery and cords on the cloth and shirt. Most often, plant ornaments are embroidered on the costume, and the most used colors are: red, white, blue, green and orange. The Thracian male costume: It belongs to the so-called black dress It consists of black pots with cords. A woolen waistcoat, which is red or green, with black ornaments, is mandatory. The other elements are: a white cotton shirt with red floral ornaments, a red belt and a black cap that is decorated with flowers.
History of men's folk costumes
History of men's folk costumes Bulgarian folk costumes are a precious heritage that is passed down from generation to generation. The clothes that people wore years ago are colorful and colorful, very beautiful. National holidays and festivities still today necessarily include folk dances in national costumes. Costumes are different in different regions of the country. Each region has its own characteristics and elements of clothing and jewelry, but the variety and bright colors make an impression everywhere. In this article we will pay attention to the men's folk costume. It mainly consists of a shirt, waistcoat, trousers and an embroidered belt. The cuffs and collar of the shirt are always beautifully decorated. There are two types of men's clothing: The first - with a predominant white color - "white dress". There are two types of trousers: Benevretsi (with narrow and long, close-to-the-body legs at the bottom) and dimia (with wide and short legs). The belt, richly decorated and dominated by red, is cinched to accentuate the waist. There is strong evidence that this costume is of Slavic origin. It is found all over Bulgaria. The second type of men's costume is "black shirt", with predominant dark colors. This clothing can definitely be called a national trend, which gained its popularity during the period of the Bulgarian Renaissance. The trousers, called poturi, are wide, with black piping. An interesting point is the common belief that the more complex and pleated the pots, the more wealthy their owner is. The outer garment has a straight cut and a long belt. Short garments of coarse home-spun wool (vest) with or without sleeves were usually worn over the shirt. The decoration was a hat. Shoes for both men and women are red. They were usually made of cow or pig skin. The turbans were worn over thick woolen socks in cool weather, fastened with long straps.
International Festival of Folk Costume - Zheravna.
Connoisseurs of Bulgarian food from the country and abroad gathered in one place once again in August 2022. Then the International Festival of Folk Costume - Zheravna was held. The dates of the Festival this year were August 19, 20, 21. During these three days, guests from all over the country gathered on the meadows near Zheravna, dressed in traditional Bulgarian costumes. This year, for the 14th time, the beautiful Zheravna has become the epicenter of Bulgarian folklore and traditions. The requirement to participate in the festival was that everyone be in costume and not bring anything from the modern world. The interesting thing is that during the festival, civilization in all its forms is prohibited - phones, sunglasses, handbags, baby carriages. Let everything be as it was 150 years ago. Besides the opportunity to travel back in time, the participants also enjoyed a rich folklore program. As every year, the program is different. Many orchestras, folk performers, famous ensembles, folklore groups, nestinars and others took part. The festival was created in 2008 on the idea of Hristo Iv. Dimitrov - producer, choreographer and director of the National Folklore Ensemble "Bulgare". As every year, we took part in the event as producers of Bulgarian folk costumes from the city of Plovdiv. The company was established in April 1990 in the city of Plovdiv and for many years has been a leader in the production of children's formal and casual clothing for children from 0 to 12 years of age. After a few years, in the course of its work, the company expands and complements its production with additional items and accessories. The acquisition of its own production bases for sewing, screen printing, embroidery, etc., makes "Pen Silhouette" even more competitive in all areas of its production. Currently, the "Pen Silhouette" team makes traditional Bulgarian costumes from all the ethnographic regions of Bulgaria: Thracian, Shopian, Dobrudzhan, Northern, Rhodope and others.
Main characteristics of women's folk costumes
The national Bulgarian costume is one of the most characteristic elements of Bulgarian folk culture. These are traditional clothes that have a special meaning both in everyday life and in the festive life of a Bulgarian. Each region of Bulgaria has its own costume with unique characteristic motifs. Main characteristics A certain code is woven into the decoration of the Bulgarian costume - according to it, in the past, Bulgarians received information about the gender of those wearing the clothes and the region of the country in which they lived. Each costume contained its own message. The Bulgarian costume consists of many elements and motifs that are rooted in pagan beliefs and legends. So, no one wore clothes with completely symmetrical decorations, because the Bulgarians believed that complete symmetry was a devilish creation. Therefore, elements are often added and removed. Costumes with two aprons Different types of Bulgarian folk costumes for women are distinguished by style. These characteristics vary in different geographical areas and depend on specific historical circumstances. The main elements of one type of clothing are: a shirt, two aprons attached to the waist (one in front, the other in the back) and a belt. Beautiful embroidery adorns much of the sleeves, front and back of the shirt. Two aprons are made from home decorative fabric: the back part is pleated and gathered, the front consists of one or two parts with horizontal or vertical embroidery. The rear apron exists in several variants (woolen, kurlianka, curtain and others) characteristic of certain geographical areas. The belt is a long piece of cloth wrapped several times around the waist. Initially, this ancient Bulgarian folk costume was spread all over the Bulgarian lands, but in later times it was preserved mainly in the area of the Danube plain. Sukman The sukman was the most common type of women's folk clothing. Its many regional varieties share some common characteristics: the type of fabric, the tunic-like cut, and the neckline. The sukman is most often a sleeveless dress, but in some places it has short or long sleeves. The decoration of this Bulgarian folk costume is concentrated on the skirt, neckline and sleeves. It consists of multi-colored embroidery, decorative fabric and appliqués of braids, varying in size and style. The main three varieties of the cloth costume are: short-line, characteristic of Western Bulgaria; high wedge, characteristic of Central Bulgaria; a two-piece sukman characteristic of some eastern regions. The sukman is worn with a belt that fastens in the front with snaps. The saya, as part of the Bulgarian folk costume, includes as its main component a shirt-tunic, which is always worn as an outer garment. The length of the skirt is different (it can be up to the knee or ankle), the sleeves are short or long. The fabric for the dress is in different colors. Monochromatic white, black, blue dresses made of cotton or woolen fabrics predominate. Costumes with one apron This type of Bulgarian folk costume is characteristic of some regions of the Danube plain and the Rhodopes. Consists of fewer elements: long shirt in the form of a tunic; an apron tied at the waist (narrow, in one part or wider in two parts) with an ornament.
What distinguishes the Northern folk costume?
On our blog, we have already told you more than once about the variety and richness of the traditional Bulgarian folk costume . Each of the six ethnographic regions of Bulgaria, in addition to its dances, songs and customs, is also distinguished by characteristic folk costumes. In this article, we will take you on an exciting journey back several centuries to tell you more about the beauty of the Northern folk costume and its characteristic features. What should we know about the Northern Folklore Region? The type of traditional folk clothing is directly related to the lifestyle, livelihood of the people of the region and their beliefs. Therefore, before paying attention in detail to the Northern folk costume, let us first tell you a little more about the folklore area itself. The Northern folklore region is one of the largest regions in the Bulgarian ethnic lands, and only the Thrace region is larger than it. It extends over the territory along Stara Planina and covers almost all of Northern Bulgaria, with the exception of Dobruja. The large administrative centers that fall within its limits today are the cities of Montana, Vidin, Vratsa, Pleven, Ruse, Targovishte, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Lovech. Due to its vast territory, Severnyashka region boasts a great folklore wealth, which includes a variety of dances, songs and traditions. Folk costumes are also extremely interesting, as different parts of the region are characterized by a different type men's and women's northern folk costumes . The differences are largely determined by whether the natives lived in the mountains or in the plains, as well as by seasons and climate. Let us tell you a little more about them. Women's Northern folk costumes Characteristic of this part of the Bulgarian lands is the so-called double apron women's costume. It was worn mainly during the warm months in the mountainous regions, and in the plains all year round. As the name clearly suggests, a distinctive feature of this type of costume is the two aprons. This type of costume consists of a white shirt, which in the western part of the district is known as a "shirt". The shirt is completed by two aprons - one that ties in front and a back pleated apron known as a "bruchnik". In the Northern folklore region, woven women's costumes are also common. They were preferred in the winter, and in the mountainous regions where the climateit is also harsher in the warmer months. This type of costume consists of a thick cloth, most often made of wool and colored black or dark blue. There are also cloths made from other traditional fabrics such as linen or cotton. The sukman has a tunic-like cut and can be either without or with long or short sleeves. Men's northern national costumes Bulgarian men's costumes are divided into two main types - black and white. Characteristic of almost the entire Severnyashka ethnographic region is the men's white dress costume. The only exception is the area of the town of Gabrovo, where men wore black costumes. The men's white shirt costume consists of a white cotton shirt, which can be of different lengths. Poturis are traditionally made of woolen cloth, with the width of the legs varying. According to ethnologists, the narrower legs of the costume were characteristic of the poorer and working population, and wide legs were only worn by the wealthier locals. Men wrap a wide red belt around their waist, and the upper part is a waistcoat, which is often richly decorated.
What is the Rhodope national costume?
In our blog, we have repeatedly told you about the origin of Bulgarian folk costumes and about the great wealth of varieties that the various ethnographic areas of the country can boast of. As you probably already know, the small territory of our country has accommodated as many as 6 folklore regions. These are the Thracian, Pirin, Rhodope, Severnyashka, Dobrudja and Shop regions - each of which is different from the others, and together they form the richness and beauty of Bulgarian folk art. Traditional national clothing to this day has preserved valuable information about the lifestyle, traditions and life of our ancestors and has helped ethnographers to study them more thoroughly and us to get to know them better. In this article, we will pay attention to one of these areas, namely the Rhodope folklore area, and tell you interesting details of the Rhodope folk costume. If you are curious to know more, keep reading: Interesting facts about the Rhodope ethnographic region The Rhodope ethnographic region has gathered in itself the power, mysticism and beauty of the mountain whose name it bears. The borders of this folklore area completely coincide with the geographical territory of the Rhodope Mountains. To the west, the Rhodope folklore region borders the Pirin region, and to the east it borders the Thracian folklore region. An interesting fact is that in the past ethnographers counted the Rhodope region as part of Thrace because of their close proximity. However, studies of life, culture, songs, dances and folk dress show significant differences, and ultimately ethnographic science decided to separate the Rhodopes as an independent folklore area. Sayana costume - the traditional clothing of the Rhodope woman As for traditional folk clothing, there are also many interesting facts here. It is important to note that for our ancestors, the making of clothing was considered a ritual and was done only on strictly specified days. It was believed to have the power to protect a person from evil forces and curses, so special symbols of protection were woven into it. The typical female folk costume that Rhodope women wore is the so-called sayana costume. This species is also widespread in the southern and southwestern parts of the Bulgarian lands. The name of the costume comes from the name of the main part in it, namely the "saya", which is a permanent outer garment. Usually the saiya is monochromatic, it can be black, red, and in some parts dark green or blue. The length of the saiya as well as the length of the sleeves varies depending on the season for which the women's costume is intended. The saiya is paired with a long tunic-like shirt made of cottonk. Rhodope men's costumes As you probably know, Bulgarian men's costumes are traditionally divided into two main types - black and white. In the Rhodope ethnographic region, men wear a black dress, which mainly consists of a waistcoat and a dark colored poturi, as its name suggests. The waistcoat is usually richly decorated, and underneath is worn a white tunic-like shirt made of cotton and also decorated with embroidery. The costume is complemented by a hood, which is called a "gugla" and is made of sheepskin. This is how the folk clothing that our ancestors from the Rhodope region looked in general. Today we still have the opportunity to touch the magic of the Rhodope costume by choosing making Rhodope folk costumes by Penn Silhouette!
